Question by Mike: Does an engagement ring have to be branded as an “official engagement ring?”?
I want to propose soon but I have little experience with jewelers. I’m not going by the “three months salary” rule, I just want to find something I like/can afford. When I’m shopping, will there be an “engagement ring section,” or do all rings count as potential engagement rings? Is there a type of ring that I should avoid buying for an engagement?

Most of the time, they will have them together. The jeweler will help you locate the ones that are in your price range. The 3 months salary rule should not even be a rule, it should be what you can comfortably afford. So be honest about how much you want to spend so they can direct you in the right direction.
Pay close attention to what type of jewelry your girlfriend wears. If she wears primarily silver jewelry, then don’t get a yellow gold ring obviously. Also if she’s more simple, wears little jewelry or little makeup you may want to go with a simple solitaire.
